All around Spring is emerging from the ground, as roots of new life begin to form and grow into beautiful buds. The hope of warm weather and sweet summer days ahead begin to swell in our hearts, as we shed our winter slumber and burdensome coats.
The Lord gives us a beautiful picture of Spring in our souls in Isaiah 55 – He has sent forth rain and snow from heaven to water the ground of our hearts in preparation for growth. But, we must look closely at where the source of feeding comes. God’s Word waters our souls, and will in return bring forth seed and ultimately feed ourselves and others.
The more I allow the Word to fall on my soul, the more I’ll grow – perhaps not immediately, but as God says, His Word will not return empty, it will accomplish what He desires. There have been winter seasons in my soul, when the Word fell like snow, quietly remaining, pristine, but not penetrating. But, with the beauty of seasons, the snow eventually melted and watered the ground of my soul. How often has God brought a Word to mind in due season – right when I needed it?!?
Years ago, the Lord convicted me as I was teaching a group of college students – “What are you doing? Why are you trying to teach something you haven’t fed on yourself?” If the Bible is the text book by which we will ultimately be judged, then why was I spending all my time relying on other’s Cliffs Notes for substance? I was feeding from sources that were meant to merely confirm or encourage God’s Word – not replace the Word itself. The Lord has affirmed the truth of His Word over and over again in my soul. The more I have allowed the Word to water my heart, the more victory and peace I have received.
Hebrews 6:7-8 affirms this concept of feeding – Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed received the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
What are you allowing to rain on the ground of your soul? And what is that reaping in your life? The Lord desires nothing but beauty for His children – the Spring of new life and growth. Come, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit will reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7-9
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. Isaiah 55:6-8
